Third Place - Goddess

Updated: Jun 6, 2022

Like all the cadent places, the third is also associated with displacement. This is an agitated house that speaks of the dynamism of short trips, the ordinary life and the places we visit more frequently - commuting to work, routine visits, shopping. These meanings are directly connected with the star that has its joy in this place, the Moon, the fastest of the planets and the one that changes its shape constantly. It is also said to be the home of siblings, relatives, and those people who are "always there" in our lives.

However, part of its beauty also lies in its connection with the religious life, sacred places, priests and priestesses. Being below the horizon, it is a nocturnal experience of spirituality: the territory of Selene, the goddess of the moon. Perhaps more associated with the feminine experience of religiosity of observance, ritualism and divination, as opposed to the great dogmatic, external, solar institutions.

If we also take into account that several religions consider the lunar calendar for collective celebrations - Christian Easter, Muslim Ramadan, and Jewish Pesach, for example - we can also note the relationship of fraternity towards religiosity.

Being the rejoicing place of the Moon, the third house has been associated with authorities over cities and figures of social-political power, similarly to the Sun that rejoices in the 9th house, the house of god. In several cultures, the ruler of a people was directly associated with the will of one or more gods, when they were not seen as representatives of a governing deity themselves. This is probably where the associations of these two houses with religiosity and authority came from.

Later in the Hellenistic astrological tradition, until today, the theme of political administration became associated with the 10th house, an example that helps us reflect on how the cultural context modifies the meanings that are assigned to the astrological places over time.
